New Haven combines a striking coastal landscape with wildlife watching and cycling. The Surat Bay Beach Walk starts in Newhaven, passes through sand dunes parallel to Surat Bay Beach, and is accessible only at low tide. This makes the tide level an important part of planning your day: check the tides before scheduling the walk.

Coastal Scenery and Wildlife Watching

Surat Bay is home to the endangered New Zealand sea lions. You can watch them on the beach as they interact or sleep. You can also see Tōrea, or oystercatchers, nesting in the area around the walk. This is a seasonal sight, offering a different perspective on the bay’s wildlife alongside the sea lions.

The name Surat Bay also tells a story of the coast: the bay was named after the sailing ship “Surat,” which was wrecked there in 1874. A visit here brings wildlife watching together with a specific historical event.

On Foot or by Bike

The Surat Bay–Pounawea cycling route includes a 16-kilometre Surat Bay Loop. While the Beach Walk is accessible only at low tide, the cycling loop has a stated distance to help you plan. New Haven Road and Duttons Road are gravel roads along the cycling route.

The route reaches New Haven and Surat Bay via a gravel road that does not continue all the way through. Together with the information about the road surface, this can help you decide what kind of outing to plan. The walk passes through dunes parallel to the beach; the cycling trip offers a different focus and includes the 16-kilometre loop.

Accommodation in New Haven

Surat Bay Lodge is a hostel in New Haven on the edge of the Catlins Estuary, right next to Surat Bay Beach. Native New Zealand sea lions live on this beach. If you’re considering staying at the lodge, check its current operating status before your trip, as this may change.

More Contrasts in the Clutha District

In the wider Clutha District destination, you can compare cycling at a different scale. The Clutha Gold Trail is 135 kilometres long, rated easy (Grade 1–2), and takes two to four days. The 62-kilometre extension between Lawrence and Waihola opened on 25 August 2023. It connects the existing trail network in Central Otago and Clutha and heads towards the east coast as a cycle trail. The local 16-kilometre loop in New Haven and this multi-day trail in the wider destination therefore differ considerably in both length and stated duration.

The Clutha District’s coastline offers another focus: it stretches for more than 200 kilometres and includes surfable beach breaks, river breaks, and reef breaks. Kākā Point is a beach break with rocky points, suitable for surfers from beginner to advanced level. Conditions there vary with swell, tides, and weather. In the wider Clutha District, cycling and surfing are other options alongside wildlife watching and the Beach Walk in New Haven.
