Middlemarch brings together the dry inland landscapes of Strath Taieri and a chapter in New Zealand’s railway history. Open farmland and rugged schist outcrops shape the landscape; it also provides habitat for birds, reptiles and insects adapted to dry inland conditions. Two distinct highlights sit side by side: a multi-day route along the former railway line and insights into local heritage.

The Otago Central Rail Trail and its history

The 150 km Otago Central Rail Trail follows the former Otago Central Branch Railway from Middlemarch to Clyde. Designed as a three- to four-day recreational route, it is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The trail provides a clear framework for a longer stay. Viaducts, masonry, bridges and some former railway stations remain as features of railway heritage, shaping the connection between activity and history.

The 150 km section between Middlemarch and Clyde closed in 1990 and officially reopened in 2000 as New Zealand’s first rail trail. The Otago Central Railway had reached Middlemarch as early as 1891. These dates mark different phases: first the arrival of the railway, then the line’s closure, and finally its reopening as a recreational route.

A museum with an unusual piece of technology

The Middlemarch Museum preserves local artefacts and stories from Strath Taieri. Its collection includes pre-European artefacts, memorabilia from farming and mining, and the Platypus submarine. The Platypus was reconstructed as a submarine at the museum and is significant in the history of submarine development on a global scale. It may be one of only two surviving submarines from its era. The museum thus connects everyday and regional history with an unusual chapter in technology.

Dry inland landscapes and the surrounding area

Beyond railway heritage, the landscape offers several other points of interest to help plan your trip. Nearby Stonehurst Track reaches an elevation of 1,100 metres above sea level. Sutton Salt Lake, New Zealand’s only inland salt lake, is also in the vicinity. The two places offer different highlights: the track for its elevation, and the lake for its distinctive inland location.

The Taieri River in and around Middlemarch is well suited to quiet walks, picnics and fishing. In the Middlemarch district, birdwatchers and nature lovers can find suitable natural areas, particularly along rivers, in wetlands and in sheltered valleys. The landscape remains closely linked to its dry inland character: it ranges from open farmland to schist outcrops and provides habitat for animals adapted to these conditions.

Local highlights and practical information

Grocott’s Organic Community Garden in Middlemarch demonstrates sustainable food production methods, including composting, making liquid fertiliser and mulching. The Middlemarch Swimming Pool is a heated indoor pool with a water temperature of 26 to 28 °C. Mid-October to March is described as a suitable period for swimming. As the pool operates seasonally and facility details can change, check current conditions before visiting.

The Middlemarch Golf Course is a public parkland course with nine holes, par 72 and a length of 5,650 metres; it is about 500 metres from the town. Course and facility details can change, so check them in advance. At three to four days, the Rail Trail is a distinctly multi-day highlight; the museum, garden, indoor pool, golf course and river appeal to other interests.

Middlemarch is on State Highway 87, about an hour’s drive northwest of Dunedin. Middlemarch is listed as the first stop on the 341 km Central Otago Touring Route from Dunedin to Queenstown. This helps distinguish two types of trip: a stay focused on the Rail Trail and including the town as part of a longer drive.
