In Tarras, traces of the gold rush meet trails along the Mata-au Clutha and a local wine culture. The river forms the western boundary of the settlement; along its banks are walking trails, swimming spots, picnic areas and places for freedom camping. There are also trips to historic sites and routes in the surrounding area. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests rather than reducing Tarras to a single experience.

Gold Rush History and Community

Tarras Community Church brings local history together with a community purpose: in 2019, ownership was transferred to the Tarras Community Church Charitable Trust so the church could be preserved as a place of worship and also used as a community facility. Visitors can collect the key from the Merino Store in Tarras Village and view the 75 embroidered kneelers described in A Tapestry of Tarras. This gives a visit a distinctive local touch, without treating the church solely as a historic building.

The gold rush era can also be traced at several sites. Tarras Cemetery lies 2 kilometres north of Tarras and is believed to date from the 1880s, when the area was a significant gold-mining settlement. Nine Mile Historic Reserve, a camping and picnic area managed by the Department of Conservation, is 22 kilometres north of Tarras. Visitors can explore nearby gold mines and other historic remains there. The cemetery and reserve thus tell the story of the area in different ways.

Bendigo Historic Reserve preserves relics of hard-rock quartz mining: mine shafts, tunnels, stone huts, stamper batteries, machinery, water races, dams and pipelines. The historic site is also the starting point for six Department of Conservation walking tracks and is approximately 17 kilometres from Tarras Village. Another example is the restored Come in Time Stamper Battery. It offers a rare, nearly complete picture of hard-rock quartz mining in Central Otago; access to it is 12 kilometres from Tarras Village.

Riverbank Trails and Routes Nearby

Along the Mata-au Clutha, riverside walks sit alongside swimming spots, picnic areas and places for freedom camping. The Lindis Valley has routes for walkers and mountain bikers; the valley can be reached between Tarras and Omarama via State Highway 8. The Upper Lindis Valley offers opportunities for walking, cycling, picnicking and fishing. Most of the tracks there start 10 to 25 kilometres from Tarras Village.

The Thompson Gorge Track offers a different option: this 30-kilometre route is for mountain bikes and four-wheel-drive vehicles, and its starting point is 12 kilometres from Tarras Village. When planning, it helps to distinguish between these figures: the 10 to 25 kilometres in the Upper Lindis Valley describes where most tracks start, while 30 kilometres is the length of the Thompson Gorge Track. This makes it easier to decide whether you would prefer several activities in one valley or a route with a specified length.
