Langs Beach: Discover the Coast and Trails
Accommodation in Langs Beach
Bream Bay is a 22-kilometre stretch of coastline with white sand and blue water that also includes Langs Beach. Several surf spots offer both left- and right-hand waves and are suitable for surfers of all experience levels. Vehicles are prohibited in the northwestern part of Langs Beach.
Trails ranging from short loops to coastal walks
The Nikau Forest Trail runs from Hector Lang Bridge alongside Wairahi Stream to the bridge on Cove Road at the entrance to Langs Beach Estate; the trail can be muddy. The Langs to Bream Tail Shared User Path passes through a wetland and is an easy, well-maintained route for pedestrians and cyclists. This gives you two different trail profiles: a path beside the stream that may be muddy, and a shared walking and cycling path through the wetland.
There are two easy options for short loops. In Hector Lang Bush Reserve, a 500 m loop winds through native bush; allow about 15 minutes to walk it. Langs Beach Scenic Reserve also offers an easy loop, 2.5 km long and taking about 30 minutes to walk. Both loops are easy, but they differ in length and approximate walking time.
The Waipu Coastal Walkway is a moderate, 5 km coastal trail. From Langs Beach, you can start via an access point on Cove Road opposite Waterman Drive, or begin in Ding Bay. Check the tides and weather before setting out. A longer and more challenging option is the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway: an 8.5 km loop that can be walked in its entirety from Langs Beach. It is closed from 1 September to 31 October during the lambing season; also check conditions before setting out. The planning advice differs for these coastal trails: check tides and weather for the Waipu Coastal Walkway, and take the recurring seasonal closure into account for the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway.
The Langsview section of the Te Araroa Trail passes through Te Waorahi and connects with Bream Tail Road. Te Waorahi is a private conservation project that has been opened to the public. The Langsview Te Araroa route is a challenging, 13.8 km trail for hiking and cycling. Allow 5–6 hours to hike it or 2 hours to cycle it. The cycling routes also have different profiles: the Langs to Bream Tail Shared User Path is easy and well-maintained, while the Langsview Te Araroa route is challenging and takes two hours to cycle.
The time required differs considerably between a short loop and a long hike: allow about 15 minutes to walk the loop in Hector Lang Bush Reserve, compared with 5–6 hours to hike the challenging Langsview Te Araroa route. This makes it easy to choose an outing that fits your schedule.
