As a stopover on State Highway 1, Kaiwaka lies about halfway between Auckland and Whangārei. At the same time, you can explore the town on foot: pedestrian bridges run alongside the highway, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river. They improve connections within Kaiwaka, so you can walk safely between shops, parks and cafés. The northern pedestrian bridge provides easy access from the town centre to McClean Park.

Park History and Convenient Places to Stop

McClean Park is associated with Archie and Bessie McClean’s 1947 gift of a plot of land to the Kaiwaka community. Today, it serves passing motorists as a place to stop and rest, and offers scenic walking trails. At Hubert Linnell Reserve, the aim of the upgrades was to improve access to Kaipara Harbour for everyone. After the project was completed in December 2024, the reserve had a concrete car park and designated spaces for boat trailers. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.

Food and Distinctive Architecture

Eutopia Café combines good food and organic coffee with an imaginative, creative atmosphere; its handmade architecture includes mosaic walls, fantastical sculptures and intricate woodwork. La Nonna Italian Bakery offers fresh pastries and coffee. At Kaiwaka Cheese Shop, you can buy specialty cheese for a picnic. Food and products may change; check current offerings if a particular selection is important to you.

Fitness and Events

The KSA Complex brings together further local amenities. Its fitness centre is equipped with strength machines, free weights, rowing machines, bikes and treadmills. The Central Entertainment Area has a licensed bar and catering facilities for events, meetings and celebrations. Facilities and booking arrangements may change; check the latest information if these amenities are central to your plans.

More Highlights in the Kaipara District

The Kaipara District, as a wider destination, offers its own nature and cultural attractions. The Kai Iwi Lakes are in a 538-hectare recreational reserve with white-sand freshwater dune lakes known for their clear water. The lakes are suitable for safe swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating and water skiing; check water conditions and safety requirements before these activities.

Another natural highlight is the 586-hectare Trounson Kauri Park, home to an impressive stand of kauri trees. It has been managed as a Mainland Island since 1995, with the aim of restoring native biodiversity and giving visitors a glimpse of ancient kauri forest. Threatened species found there include the North Island brown kiwi, Kƫkupa, pekapeka bats and kauri snails; sightings are not guaranteed. Dargaville Museum offers a focus on cultural history, with seven exhibition halls covering Māori taonga, kauri gum diggers, transport and agriculture, pioneers, collections, maritime history and music.
