Levin combines a lakeside park and a wide range of recreational activities with gardens, culture and trails through protected forest. This makes the town appealing for all kinds of holiday days: you can spend time at Lake Horowhenua, explore what the cultural centre has to offer, or choose between short walks and a steep hike. Which of these appeals most to you may also influence where you stay.

A lakeside park with a playground—and clear restrictions on use

The landscaped MuaĆ«poko Park is on the shore of Lake Horowhenua (Punahau). From the park, you can look out over the lake; there is also a playground. You can walk to the park from the entrance on Queen Street, while vehicle access cannot be guaranteed. The lake is not suitable for swimming, and motorboats are not allowed. If you’re planning a break by the water, focus on the view and the playground rather than a day of swimming.

Play and exercise at Levin Adventure Park

Levin Adventure Park offers a wide variety of play and exercise options, including a flying fox, wobble drums, rope course, climbing wall and fitness trail, as well as a mini basketball court, skate area, sand volleyball court and pétanque courts. There are also accessible swings and a separate dog exercise area. A brightly designed play area is intended for children under five; other play equipment is suitable for all ages. As facilities may change, check the details before your visit.

A miniature railway operated by Rotary offers free rides on weekends and during school holidays from 12 to 2 pm. Check in advance whether rides are available. There are also three spaces for self-contained motorhomes in the northern car park; parking rules may also change.

From a short forest walk to a steep climb

Prouse Bush Reserve is in Levin’s south-eastern industrial and residential areas. Short trails there pass through protected podocarp forest; a picnic area is about a five-minute drive from central Levin. The Kohitere Trig offers a different kind of outing: the steep climb is about two kilometres long and takes around 60 minutes to reach the summit. From the top, panoramic views extend across Horowhenua, south to Kapiti Island and north to Mount Ruapehu.

The Kohitere Trig Track connects with the Mangahao-Makahika Track towards Palmerston North and forms part of the Te Araroa Trail. Kohitere Forest also provides access to Tararua Forest Park. However, access to the forest crosses private land, and public entry is considered a privilege granted by the landowner. Read the current signs before visiting. You should also check trail conditions before tackling Kohitere Trig. This makes it easy to distinguish the short walk at Prouse Bush from the much longer, steep hike as two different ways to experience nature.

Gardens, history and culture in Levin

The Nola Simpson Rose Garden surrounds the historic Levin Courthouse, built in 1903, and is home to numerous rose varieties. The garden is named after Nola Simpson, an award-winning New Zealand rose breeder. Thompson House Park offers botanical attractions throughout the year on the grounds of historic Thompson House. It first received a Green Flag Award in 2018/2019; the award has been renewed every year since.

Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pƍ is in the heart of Levin. This cultural and community centre brings together library services, programmes and facilities for the community, business, young people and tourism. Its role for visitors includes recreation, culture, learning, digital services and social activities. For a stay focused on culture, it complements the gardens and parks with a different set of things to explore.
