A glacier-shaped landscape, a town in a Dark Sky Reserve, and routes for cycling and hiking give Twizel its distinctive character. Its history is also closely connected with hydroelectric power in Aotearoa New Zealand. If you want to combine nature experiences with insights into the town’s history, Twizel offers several ways to do so.

Landscape, Climate and Dark Night Skies

Twizel sits at an elevation of 470 metres in the rain shadow of the Southern Alps. The town is located in an inland basin surrounded by mountain ranges. Glaciers shaped the surrounding landscape, carving out valleys and depositing moraines. The subalpine climate brings hot, dry summers and cold winters. The season and your planned activities are therefore useful factors to consider when planning your stay.

Twizel is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. The Twizel Stargazing Experience also takes place in Twizel. Its hydroelectric power history offers a different focus: it is closely connected with the town’s history and also links your stay to New Zealand’s development.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

Twizel has walking tracks of various lengths for all experience levels. The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail also passes through the town: cyclists can ride the entire route or a single section. This lets you plan your ride either as a longer outing or as a stage; conditions along the route may vary.

Near Twizel, the Twizel River Trail is a shared-use singletrack suitable for mountain biking. Some sections may be washed out, in which case you will need to push your bike. The trail also offers a walking route with quiet swimming spots and picnic areas. Flooding is possible in the lower sections, and river crossings may be necessary. These details can help when planning your time on the river trail and choosing between cycling and walking.

Golf is another option in town: the Ben ĹŚhau Golf Course in Twizel has 9 holes and 16 tees. Course details may change, so check the latest information in advance if you plan to play there.

Three kilometres south of Twizel, High Country Salmon offers a fully guided salmon fishing experience. Equipment is provided, and no previous experience is needed. Booking procedures and opening hours may change, so check them if you want to plan the experience as a fixed part of your itinerary.

Town Life and Accommodation Planning

Twizel has cafés, bars, restaurants and shops. If you would rather fill your stay with outdoor activities, you can focus on the walking tracks, cycling route and lakeside options; if you are interested in local history, hydroelectric power offers a thematic connection. When planning accommodation, it helps to first decide which experiences you want and distinguish between options in town and activities in the surrounding area.

Twizel is also home to the Meridian Lake Ruataniwha Rowing Complex, a national rowing course. Events and operating procedures may change. If you want to plan your trip around a specific event or use of the facility, check the latest dates and arrangements in advance.
