Methven combines alpine activities, hot pools and walking tracks with surprising insights into the town’s history. This means a stay can take many different directions: heliskiing in the mountains, a day in the water, a walk along the canal or discovering community-created projects. Which of these shapes your stay can also be a useful starting point when choosing accommodation.

Winter Sports and Hot Pools

Methven Heliski offers more than 200 named heliski routes across three mountain ranges. Heliskiing and helisnowboarding adventures are available in the Arrowsmiths. These details make winter sports a clear focus for travellers who want to combine Methven with alpine activities. Operating details and availability may change; check current dates before planning your trip.

During the ski season, ski buses run daily from Methven to the Mt Hutt base building. There are several pick-ups in the morning. If you want to include this seasonal transport in your plans, check the current operator and timetable before travelling.

ĹŚpuke Thermal Pools & Spa offers a different kind of day: in Methven, the destination combines a premium hot-pool experience with an exclusive day spa. It lies at the foot of Mt Hutt, also known as ĹŚpuke. Winter sports and hot pools offer different focuses for planning a trip, without limiting your stay to a single activity.

Walks, Water and Small Discoveries

The Methven Walkway is 12 kilometres long and begins and ends at the Methven iHub. It opened in 1979. Several rural roads cross the route, so visitors can walk different sections. You can plan around the distance you want to cover rather than treating the full length as the only option.

The Rangitata Diversion Race, locally known as the RDR, also shapes the landscape along the walkway. The artificial canal supplies irrigation water in summer and hydroelectric power in winter. It attracts ducks and other wildlife along its banks. Its changing function connects a walk with a glimpse of local water management.

The Enchanted Forest is a section of the Methven Walkway beside the Methven Racecourse. Fairy doors in the trees and painted stones along the path give it a character of its own. The installations were created by the community and may change. The Piwakawaka Walk can also be done independently or as part of the Methven Walkway; brightly coloured wooden fantails are dotted along the route in both directions.

The Piwakawaka Walk reflects the involvement of local families, artists, a playcentre, schools and residents of Methven Aged Care. Those interested in community-designed places will find another stop in Methven’s town centre: the New Zealand Alpine & Agriculture Encounter is an interactive visitor attraction. The Methven Skatepark adds another active option, with a large bowl, a mini-ramp and a street/transition area; its facilities may change.

Local History and a Nearby Natural Area

The New Zealand Ski Memorabilia project was established in 2000 as part of the Methven Heritage Centre to preserve the history of skiing in New Zealand. The heritage-listed RDR pump house offers another perspective on local history and is considered a unique engineering structure. Visitor information dated 13 February 2025 describes access for the local community and tourists via the Garden of Harmony.

As a standalone natural attraction near Methven, Hakatere Conservation Park offers a striking contrast in scenery. Covering almost 60,000 hectares, it includes rugged uplands, tussock grassland, beech forest, and clear rivers and lakes between the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers. It complements the local tracks and waterscapes with a vast natural landscape.

If ski buses or heliskiing options are important for your travel dates, include current timetables or dates and availability in your plans.
