Get to know Loburn through its memorials, creative classes, and a distinctive local dish. The memorials reflect different historical themes; acrylic pouring classes focus on colour theory and creating your own artwork. These offer a range of themes to help shape your travel plans. The wider Waimakariri District also offers its own landscapes and recreational opportunities.

Memorials and Remembrance in Loburn

The North Loburn School Fallen Scholars’ Memorial is a column monument erected in 1919 at 813 Loburn Whiterock Road in Loburn. It commemorates eight former pupils who died in service during the First World War. Its dedication is therefore to a specific group from the school’s history. The Loburn War Memorial focuses on a broader scope of remembrance.

A 2015 council reserve plan lists Loburn Domain at 154 Loburn Whiterock Road. Check local access conditions before setting out. The Loburn War Memorial is in the northern part of the Domain, north of the upper car park and between the pottery building and Loburn Whiterock Road. It honours the ten major conflicts in which New Zealand has been involved, as well as the country’s peacekeeping missions. It was designed as a place for reflection, where individuals and groups can remember and reflect on the past at any time. The two memorials thus offer different perspectives: one commemorates eight former pupils, while the other remembers New Zealand’s conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

Acrylic Pouring and Local Cuisine

Sunflower Studio offers acrylic pouring classes in Loburn, North Canterbury. The course covers the basics of colour theory, mixing colours, and the mixing recipes used. Participants create a poured artwork on a 20 × 16-inch canvas. Those interested in combining an understanding of colour with creative practice will find a clearly defined focus here, from theory and mixing through to the finished work.

Another local idea comes from the kitchen: Loburn’s Lemongrass restaurant created a dish called Lemongrass Crackle. The named ingredients are Foothills honey, Loburn lime, and fresh lemongrass grown locally. These ingredients give the creation a distinctive profile and set this culinary detail apart from the area’s historical and creative themes.

Tūhaitara Coastal Park includes Tūtaepatu Lagoon and The Pines Wetland. Its tracks offer opportunities for walking, cycling, and horse riding. This regional perspective broadens the range of landscapes and activities: in addition to tracks through bush and hills, the settings mentioned include waterways and wetlands. This information describes the Waimakariri District, not additional features of Loburn.
