Leithfield: Church History and Coastal Lagoon Walks
Accommodation in Leithfield
Leithfield combines a remarkable church-building history with a walk that follows the Kowai River to the coastal lagoon and the beach spit. Nearby, Northern Pegasus Bay adds the beach areas of Leithfield and Amberley, as well as the Ashley Estuary, to the picture. This gives you different ways to focus your trip: architecture and local history in Leithfield, or activities on and around the water and coast.
Church-Building History in Leithfield
St Paul’s Church (Anglican) in Leithfield was built in 1907 using parts of the original church, which had been built here in 1863–1864. The Christchurch architects England Brothers designed the 1907 church. The original church was completed in 1864 and was among the earliest churches in North Canterbury. This means two periods of construction are connected at the same site: the early place of worship and the later building, which incorporated parts of its predecessor.
St Paul’s Church is a small church with a rectangular plan, a large chancel, and an entrance porch. Its grounds are characterised by trees. The church retains original fittings from the earlier building: kauri floorboards, a baptismal font made of Weka Pass limestone, an altar, a lectern, a bishop’s chair, and brass lamps. The architecture and these preserved details make the building’s history tangible—from the form of the building to the materials and objects inside.
The Old Leithfield Hotel is also part of local travel history. Historically, it had stables and an adjoining accommodation building. It served as an overnight stop for travellers, including passengers on Cobb and Co coaches. This former stopping place adds another perspective to the church history, showing Leithfield as a place along historic travel routes.
Coast and Activities Nearby
Nearby, Northern Pegasus Bay includes the beach areas of Leithfield and Amberley, as well as the Ashley Estuary. Opportunities there include fishing, swimming, birdwatching, and horse riding. This range spans activities on the water, birdwatching, and riding. When planning your days, you can decide whether you want to focus on time at the coast, getting active, or observing nature.
The Kowai River Walk starts beside the Kowai River Bridge in Leithfield and follows the Kowai River to the coastal lagoon and the beach spit. The return trip to the car park at Leithfield Beach takes 2–3 hours. This time estimate includes the return to the car park as well as the outward walk, helping you plan the walk as a dedicated block of time.
The Amberley Area Cycle Trail offers a different route. A regional description from November 2024 places its start near The Old Leithfield Hotel and describes the first section between Amberley and Leithfield as a route for cycling, walking, and running that avoids State Highway 1. Check the route information before setting out on a current trip. The Kowai River Walk can be planned as a 2–3-hour return trip; the Cycle Trail, by contrast, is defined by the travel modes mentioned and the link between the two towns.
More Experiences in the Wider Hurunui District
As a broader travel destination, the Hurunui District offers other distinct experiences. Weka Pass Historic Reserve was officially established in 1969. A 40-minute walk there leads to a large limestone overhang with examples of early Māori rock art. Access to the Māori rock art starts at the Waikari Village Walkway, with trailheads at the Star and Garter Hotel on SH7 or from Waikari. During the seasonal lambing period, the walkway is closed from 1 August to 1 October.
Woodlands Walk offers a different landscape, also in the wider Hurunui District: it is a short, family-friendly loop at the entrance to Hanmer Forest Park. The track passes through forest and meadows, as well as stands of Douglas firs, poplars, and redwoods. The rock art at Weka Pass and the forest walk are therefore quite different from Leithfield’s church-building history and the coastal setting of the Kowai River Walk.
This choice can help you match your preferred place to stay with your travel plans before searching for hotels.
