Forest, river and cycle trails

Talbot Reserve protects 28 hectares of mixed podocarp and hardwood forest. Talbot Forest is a remnant of ancient podocarp and hardwood forest on the outskirts of Geraldine, a five-minute walk from the town centre. The Talbot Forest Scenic Reserve is situated on a 2.5-million-year-old basalt lava flow.

Talbot Forest has several short walking trails linked by scenic picnic areas. In the centre of Geraldine, the tree-lined Waihi River Walk follows the banks of the Waihi River. The two walking options differ in location: one follows the river through the town centre, while the other winds through forest on the outskirts of Geraldine.

You can also explore the area by bike: Bike Geraldine offers a network of shared cycling trails through the forest reserves and gorges of Geraldine. This gives you a choice of activities, from walking in the forest or along the river to cycling through wooded landscapes.

History and technology in Geraldine

The Geraldine Historical Museum is housed in the original Town Board Office. Built in 1885, the building is classified as a Category 2 historic building. The museum brings local stories to life through engaging exhibits, life-size photographs and audiovisual presentations. The building and its exhibits connect the town’s history with a range of ways to explore it.

The Geraldine Military Museum offers everyone the chance to see, experience and learn about military history. The Geraldine Vintage Machinery & Car Museum offers a different perspective, displaying veteran vehicles, vintage and classic cars, tractors and machinery. Its exhibits are spread across eight purpose-built buildings. Together, these attractions cover a range of cultural interests, from local stories and military history to vehicles and machinery.
