Duvauchelle: Māori history and golf in the hill country
Accommodation in Duvauchelle
Duvauchelle combines a distinctive local history with golf in the hill country and views of Akaroa Harbour. It also has clearly identified waterfront locations and the Ōnawe Peninsula nearby. If you’re looking for accommodation here, you can first consider whether cultural history, golf or the area’s scenic landmarks will shape your stay.
Local history at specific sites
The former Duvauchelle Saleyards building and its surroundings have contextual significance as a local landmark; they recall the site of the village’s former livestock saleyards. The building was used as the stockyards office for 58 years and illustrates the way of life of the local farming community during that time. Another historical point of reference is Oinako: in the area of today’s Duvauchelle Hotel, this was a fortified Māori settlement, a pā. These two references highlight different aspects of local history: the life of the farming community and a fortified Māori settlement.
Duvauchelle Cemetery is also precisely located: it sits on a hill just outside the settlement, at the head of Akaroa Harbour basin.
Ōnawe and access
The Ōnawe Peninsula is a volcanic plug in Akaroa Harbour that separates Barry's Bay and Duvauchelle. It is nearby. Because of the site’s cultural significance, access to its walking track is by permission only. Confirm this requirement before visiting if you plan to walk the track.
Waterfront locations
Duvauchelle Wharf is on the southwestern side of the bay, on Onawe Flat Road, opposite the boat ramp. Duvauchelle Slipway is on Seafield Road, where Duvauchelle Jetty is also located. Their locations distinguish the wharf from the two Seafield Road sites. Check the wharf’s condition and access before travelling there.
Golf and other trip-planning details
The scenic Akaroa Golf Course in Duvauchelle is an 18-hole course in hilly terrain, with views of Akaroa Harbour. The clubhouse is signposted on Pawsons Valley Road, off the Akaroa-Christchurch Highway in Duvauchelle. Golf clubs and golf trolleys are available from the Akaroa Golf Club office; check current availability and visitor arrangements directly with the club before your round.
There is a public playground at Duvauchelle Camping Ground. Families may want to include it as a possible stop in their plans; check its current condition before visiting. A permit is required for the Ōnawe walking track, while the playground’s current condition should be checked.
A 2018 community directory lists the Duvauchelle A & P Show as taking place each November. Ask the organisers whether this timing still applies if you’d like to plan your trip around it.
