Lake Tarawera is one of New Zealand’s largest lakes. There are geothermal springs on its northern and southern shores. Different ways to enjoy the outdoors come together at the lake: lakeside trails, boating, swimming and seasonal fishing. The places and activities each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, first consider whether you’d rather experience the lake on foot, from the water or by spending time at a bay.

On foot along the shore

The 15 km Tarawera Trail is a bush walk through native forest that follows the shore of Lake Tarawera to Te Rātā Bay and Hot Water Beach. The trail passes through lakeside forest to Te Hinau Bay and past the cold springs of Twin Streams. The lakeside forest and springs mark distinct landscape features along the trail. About 5 km from the start of the Tarawera Trail, Hawaiki Bay offers access to the lake and a picnic area with toilets. If you’d like to combine your walk with a break by the water, the bay is a specific stop along the way. Check the latest official track information and the condition of the facilities before your visit.

The Tarawera Walkway passes through Stoney Point. The area is popular for swimming and boating. As conditions can change, check the latest information before your visit.

Boating routes and cultural sites

If you’re out on Lake Tarawera, you can moor at Rāpatu Bay and walk along the Isthmus Track to Lake Rotomahana. Punaromia has traditional landing places and boat departure points on the lake. From Punaromia (Tarawera Landing), a short walk leads to the ancient rock carvings of the Tuhourangi. This makes a named departure point where boating activities and a cultural site sit side by side.

For walkers, Totally Tarawera operates a water taxi on Lake Tarawera. It can take you to the 15 km Tarawera Trail and other popular walking tracks around the lake, or pick you up from them. Bookings are required, and availability may change; check when planning your transfer.

Seasonal activities and history

Fishing also varies by location and season: Rangiuru Bay is a popular spot for summer shore fishing. Trout fishing at Punaromia is especially popular during the autumn months. These examples therefore represent different types of fishing at different times of year. Seasonal fishing conditions can change; check the latest information in advance.

The area around Lake Tarawera is considered the birthplace of tourism in New Zealand. This historical connection adds another perspective to today’s opportunities at the lake. Use it to focus your search on the experiences you’d like to prioritise.
