A landmark in Epsom is Cornwall Park, located in the heart of the area and covering more than 425 acres. Lawns and flower gardens meet native trees and woodland. One Tree Hill, a volcanic cone offering views over the city and harbour, also rises within the park. Epsom’s landscape, nature watching and park history thus offer distinct focuses for your trip.

Gardens, Pastures and Wildlife

More than 30 bird species pass through or live in Cornwall Park; visitors can watch and listen for them. The number of species may change over time. If you would rather focus on trees and gardens, the park has more than 350 tree species and 8,000 trees to discover. The Grotto is a walk-through garden and is home to some of New Zealand’s rarest plants. Birdwatching, the tree collection and the Grotto offer different ways to experience the park’s natural environment.

Cornwall Park has been used as farmland for more than a century. It has around 600 sheep and 60 cows; these animal counts are approximate and may change. There is a seasonal difference from July to September: when newborn lambs and calves arrive, there are at least twice as many animals. The season therefore affects the overall number of animals, which you can take into account when planning your trip.

Walking and Activities

Numerous tracks and paths run through Cornwall Park, offering walks focused on nature and heritage. Some tracks also cross farmland. Cornwall Park is also part of the Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland Coast-to-Coast Walk; the route enters the park from Manukau Road via Campbell Crescent. Check current track conditions before setting out.

The park’s programme includes art exhibitions, outdoor concerts and guided walks throughout the year. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event or tour, check the relevant dates. Barbecue areas are free to use on a first-come, first-served basis; these terms of use may change. Tennis courts and a children’s playground are also available. If their availability is important for your visit, check before you arrive. Visitors can also try archery in the park; check current arrangements with the park.

Buildings and History

Huia Lodge was built between 1901 and 1903. On 26 August 1903, the official opening ceremony of Cornwall Park was held there, presided over by Sir John. The Huia Lodge Discovery Hub is designated as a heritage site; visitors can learn more about Cornwall Park there. Acacia Cottage and some old trees in the park are also designated as heritage sites. These places and features add specific historical points of interest to the nature experiences.
