Bora Bora offers experiences on the lagoon, cultural sites and dramatic mountains. When planning, it is worth first considering whether water activities, cultural discoveries or a mountain hike will shape your stay. These priorities can also help guide your search for accommodation.

Lagoon, Culture and Special Places

Explore the lagoon by outrigger canoe or paddleboard. Activities include swimming excursions, picnics on a motu, walks and sunset cruises. This offers more than one way to spend time on the water. If you are looking for activity on land, the mountains offer a different focus for planning your trip.

Tradition and History on Bora Bora

In Mā’ohi oral tradition, Tumu-iti is considered the birthplace of the god Ta’aroa, creator of the universe in Polynesian mythology. Official designation of the site is under consideration. Ōfa’i honu offers a different cultural perspective: the rock symbolizes the birth of the island’s founder, Firiāmata-ō-vavau. Several petroglyphs depict, among other things, turtles; since 1952, the rock has been designated a historic monument. Tradition, symbolism and rock carvings give these places different associations.

By the sea, Marae Maro-tetini stretches for more than 50 meters, with upright coral slabs. These slabs distinguish the site in a different way from the petroglyphs at Ōfa’i honu. Together, these examples offer different ways to discover Bora Bora through its cultural heritage.

Some local guides on Bora Bora offer themed tours of the military remains of Operation Bobcat. Check before your trip whether the tour you want is available. For orientation on the island: Matira Beach is a few minutes from Vaitape, Bora Bora’s main town.

Mountain Hikes with Different Levels of Difficulty

Mont Pahia is 661 meters high and accessible to experienced hikers; a guide is mandatory, and you should allow half a day for the hike. Mont Otemanu reaches 727 meters, but is reserved for experienced mountaineers and requires technical equipment. So the difference in elevation alone does not describe the demands: Pahia requires a guide and time planning, while Otemanu specifically requires experienced mountaineers and technical equipment. Check local conditions before attempting an ascent.

Other Islands in the Wider Leeward Islands Destination

If you consider Bora Bora as part of the wider Leeward Islands destination, you can also include other island profiles. Taha’a has numerous vanilla plantations; confirm arrangements for individual visits in advance. Taha’a is directly accessible by ferry from Tahiti, Bora Bora and Huahine. Check current operators and schedules when planning.

Huahine consists of Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti, which are connected by a bridge; Huahine Nui is the larger island. Air Tahiti flies to Huahine from Papeete in 35 minutes and from Bora Bora in 25 minutes. Check current routes and flight schedules if you use this information to plan your trip.

On Raiatea, Marae Taputapuatea was once a religious and political center of power throughout Polynesia, including Hawaii, New Zealand, Easter Island and the Cook Islands. Raiatea’s landscape features a lagoon, rocky mountain cliffs and lush, distinctive vegetation. The island is also home to Polynesia’s only navigable river.
