On Nanuya Balavu Island, reef, island exploration and Fijian culture come together. Mantaray Island Resort is located on the island in Fiji’s Yasawa Group. The reef directly in front of the resort has been a voluntarily protected marine park since 2003. This gives the island an appealing perspective on marine life and experiences on land.

Reef, Snorkelling and Manta Rays

The reef directly in front of the resort is considered rich in vibrant reef gardens and marine life, including parrotfish, sea anemones, clownfish, moray eels and pipefish. Guided snorkelling excursions are available, subject to the provider’s availability. From May to October, Pacific manta rays inhabit the waters around the resort during manta ray season. The timing can naturally vary. Guided manta ray tours are designed to make encounters as gentle as possible and avoid disturbing the animals’ natural behaviour.

There are also different formats for diving: the resort offers SSI (Scuba Schools International) diving courses, subject to the provider’s availability. Night dives at Manta Dive may be possible on request, depending on conditions and bookings. The resort describes itself as Fiji’s only accredited freediving provider and offers the opportunity to learn to dive on a single breath.

Trails, Views and Island History

While exploring Mantaray Island, you can visit nine white-sand beaches. Guided walks introduce you to the traditional uses of native plants. A lookout offers views of the surrounding islands and tropical reef. In this way, exploring the water is combined with experiences of the island itself.

Manta rays still glide through the water at the southern tip of Korosamoa. The rock formations of Korosamoa are still said to bear the marks of Sulua’s tentacles. An island legend tells how Buli Balavu shattered a landmass into four islands, including Nanuya Balavu. The legend adds its own island story to the natural experiences.

Fijian Culture, Food and Relaxation

The weekly Fiji Night on Mantaray Island features a lovo demonstration and a meke performance with traditional Fijian songs and dances. Craft classes teach palm weaving and how to make coconut jewellery. Other ways to experience the resort’s offerings include a menu featuring locally caught fish and seasonal tropical fruits, as well as Mantaray Island Day Spa. Massages and beauty treatments are offered there in a tranquil hillside setting overlooking the sea.

Excursions beyond Nanuya Balavu may also be part of your plans: the village of Soso is two islands away from Nanuya Balavu. Village tours take place daily and can be arranged through the resort’s activities team.
