Northern Division sparks interest with species-rich reefs, protected forests and a chocolate tour that shows the journey from cocoa bean to finished product. Established in 1997, the Namena Marine Reserve is Fiji’s largest no-take reserve; its reef is home to more than 1,000 fish species. Marine life, forests and local production offer very different starting points for planning a trip.

Reefs, Reserves and Marine Life

The Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu is home to the brightly colored soft corals of Rainbow Reef. In the wider Fiji destination, Rainbow Reef encompasses around 25 dive sites, including the Great White Wall. Waitabu offers another perspective: the Marine Park covers 27 hectares and provides a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. The Waitabu Marine Reserve on Taveuni is a reef dedicated to snorkelling tourism and environmental education.

Natewa Bay is the largest bay in the South Pacific. Its shallow reefs feature lively coral gardens, numerous hard corals, large colorful sea fans and thousands of Christmas tree worms. The bay is also home to two large groups of spinner dolphins. Guided water tours can follow them; whether the animals appear depends on conditions and their behavior. So plan a sighting as a possible experience, not a guaranteed part of your itinerary.

Those who swim or dive in the Namena Marine Reserve can purchase the voluntary Namena Reserve Dive Tag. Visitor contribution requirements can change, so check them before your trip.

Forests, Palms and Coastal Features

On Vanua Levu, Waisali Rainforest Reserve is one of the few remaining unspoiled forests. The Flora Tropica Gardens offer a different kind of natural diversity: 250 palm species from around the world grow there, including rare and endangered species. The Vuna Blowholes, in turn, are shaped by the tides. At high tide, seawater shoots high into the air through the lava rock; the strongest eruptions depend on the tide and swell.

These landscapes appeal to different interests: Waisali for rainforest, the Flora Tropica Gardens for a diverse palm collection, and Vuna for a coastline shaped by water levels and swell. This allows you to plan your trip around the nature themes that interest you most, without limiting it to just one kind of experience.

Chocolate and Village Visits

KokoMana offers a 1.5- to 2-hour tree-to-bar chocolate tour. It shows the production process, from processing the cocoa beans to grinding them, and ends at the forest factory with a tasting of the chocolate made there. The specific duration makes the tour a clearly defined activity when planning your trip.

A village visit also requires a different kind of preparation than observing nature. Arrange visits to villages in the Savusavu area with a representative of the village concerned, as villages are private spaces. Contacts and arrangements may change.

Choosing the Right Accommodation

Your accommodation choice can therefore reflect your actual travel interests rather than a general idea of the region.
