A trip to Kadavu can be shaped by very different impressions: the Great Astrolabe Reef, the rugged coastline and cultural experiences in Kadavu Province.

Reef and islands

In Kadavu Province, the Great Astrolabe Reef protects the islands. The reef in the Kadavu island group is considered one of the largest and healthiest coral reefs in the world. Its extensive reef system is rich in pelagic and reef fish and lies close to shore; divers and snorkelers consider it easily accessible. The reef therefore offers a clear focus on nature and water for trip planning.

Kadavu is an archipelago that includes Ono, Buliya, Yaukuve and other islands; many of them are uninhabited. The also-uninhabited island of Yabu lies north of Ono Island. It is locally known as “Birdland” because numerous seabird species breed there. The reef and birdlife represent different nature-focused themes within Kadavu Province.

Culture and activities in Kadavu Province

In Kadavu Province, visitors can explore villages and schools, stay with a local family, and experience song and dance performances and other traditional activities. This lets you complement views of the sea and nature with encounters with village life and traditions. If you are travelling with family, you can decide together whether cultural experiences, nature by the water or active days should be the focus.

For an active itinerary, multi-day kayak trips in the wider region follow Kadavu’s rugged coastline and connect several resorts. In Kadavu Province, some resorts also offer their guests the opportunity to dive and snorkel with large, gentle manta rays. This experience is available only to guests of those resorts. Kayak tours, manta rays and cultural activities therefore offer different focuses that you can weigh up when planning.

Getting there and local context

Regular flight and ferry services operate to and from the mainland for Kadavu. Check current flight and ferry schedules when planning your specific trip. Older information about the road to Kadavu Village should also be viewed in its historical context: a report from July 2017 noted that the road from Vunisea then reached only as far as Vunisei District School, and that Kadavu Village and other villages depended on fibre-glass boats.

In September 2023, the access road built for Kadavu Village was passable only in favourable weather because the pilot sections had not yet been gravelled. This describes the conditions at the time, not a current road closure. Check access conditions if Kadavu Village is part of your plans.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation search

When searching for hotels in Kadavu, you can first decide what you want to focus on: the reef and snorkelling, multi-day kayaking or cultural experiences in Kadavu Province. Then check where the activity you want takes place and how it fits with your travel arrangements. For a family trip, this order helps make different interests clear before you choose accommodation as a base.
