Wyndham combines views of the harbour and rivers with a history that encompasses local topics as well as the impacts of the Second World War in north-west Western Australia. There is also a large Boab, the concrete statue The Big Croc and the Warriu Dreamtime Statues. The attractions show different sides of the town: from views over Cambridge Gulf to activities on the water, historical exhibitions and cultural depictions.

Harbour, rivers and water activities

Five Rivers Lookout offers views over Wyndham’s harbour area and Cambridge Gulf. The King, Ord, Durack, Forrest and Pentecost rivers flow into the gulf; all five can be seen from the lookout. Their names give the landscape view a clear point of reference: you can see the rivers not just as part of the view, but also identify each one by name and relate it to Cambridge Gulf.

Anthon’s Landing offers a different focus. It is a very popular spot for boating, fishing and other recreational activities. While Five Rivers Lookout centres on views of the harbour, gulf and rivers, this is a place for activities on the water. Marine access conditions can change; check them before taking part in related activities.

History in Wyndham

The MV Koolama is a site of historical significance from the Second World War. Its story points to the impacts of the war in north-west Western Australia and the strategic importance of shipping and Wyndham’s north-western harbour. The ship is thus connected not only with the town’s history, but also with a wider regional context.

The Wyndham Historical Museum covers several chapters of the town’s history. Exhibition topics include the establishment and decline of the Old Port Township, the Wyndham Meatworks, early aviation and the air raids on Wyndham during the Second World War, including the sinking of the MV Koolama. Exhibition topics may change. The MV Koolama therefore connects the history of the Second World War with a specific subject featured in the museum’s exhibitions.

Cultural depictions and distinctive landmarks

At Warriu “Dreamtime” Park, the Warriu Dreamtime Statues depict the early life of Aboriginal people at Wyndham 3 Mile. The figures show an Aboriginal family alongside a dingo, a goanna, a snake and a kangaroo. The statues are made of copper and bronze; they were first installed in 1988 and restored in 2017. While the museum brings together various topics from the town’s history and wartime past, these figures focus on a family being depicted and the animals beside them.

The Big Croc is a 20-metre-long and 3-metre-high concrete statue of a saltwater crocodile and makes a photo opportunity. Another distinctive landmark is the Biggest Boab in Captivity, behind Wyndham Caravan Park. The tree is approximately 25 metres around at its widest point. The sign beside it estimates its age at at least 2,000 years.

Wyndham as a destination and accommodation base

When choosing a hotel in Wyndham, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: should it be more about scenery and views, activities on the water, or culture and local history? If the Gibb River Road is part of your plans, Wyndham is also a starting or ending point for the adventure. Then compare the location of the specific accommodation you are considering with your own plans.
