Esperance combines a striking coastal landscape with trails that let you explore the area in different ways, and a diverse cultural history. The 40-kilometre Great Ocean Drive loop passes beaches, rocky headlands, small bays, steep cliffs and hidden seawater pools. There are also short loop walks, longer coastal stretches and places where you can discover the region’s history.

Coastal Routes and Walks

Along the Great Ocean Drive, you can snorkel, surf, swim, cycle and go bushwalking. Seasonal whale watching is also among the activities, depending on conditions. A cycling and walking path runs from the Esplanade along the coast to Twilight Cove, then through bushland to Pink Lake and back to town via Pink Lake Road. The route described therefore alternates between coastal stretches, bushland and Pink Lake.

At Rotary Lookout, you can choose between two loop walks: Walk 1 is 750 metres long and Walk 2 is 1.3 kilometres; both distances are for the return trip. Walk 2 crosses exposed granite rock to the summit of Dempster Head, offering views over West Beach. If you’d like to combine another short walk with a connection to industrial history, Salmon Beach Wind Farm Heritage Trail is an easy 1.5-kilometre walk to six decommissioned wind turbines. The trail runs around Australia’s first commercial wind farm. Trail details may change; check the latest local information before setting out.

Museums, Art and Performances

Esperance Museum explores the history of Esperance and the development of the region. One especially unusual feature is its extensive display of debris from NASA’s Skylab. Museum Village in the town centre offers another way to explore local history: relocated historic buildings form a group alongside shops and the Esperance Visitor Centre.

Cannery Arts Centre stands on the foreshore and was originally built in 1949 as a fish cannery. Today, it offers exhibitions and workshops for the Esperance region and its visitors; the current programme may change. The stages also tell different chapters of local life: since opening in 1896, Bijou Theatre has served generations as a venue for dances, meetings, agricultural shows, cinema and roller skating. Today, it hosts community theatre performances. Esperance Civic Centre presents a variety of performances throughout the year, with a changing programme. Works by more than 40 local artists are available to buy at Esperance Community Arts; artist participation and the selection may change.

Esperance and the wider destination of the Shire of Esperance

Esperance is known to the Nyungar as Kepa Kurl, meaning “where the water lies like a boomerang”. For a broader regional perspective, consider the wider destination of the Shire of Esperance: the district covers 44,000 square kilometres of farmland, reserves and five national parks. Its coastline stretches for more than 400 kilometres from the Recherche Archipelago to the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. These figures give an idea of the extent of landscapes and nature across the wider destination, without implying that all these areas are part of the town of Esperance.

The Shire also includes Cape Le Grand National Park, with its rugged coastline, large granite outcrops and white beaches. The three-kilometre Frenchman Peak Trail climbs the eastern slope to the summit, with views over the national park, the south coast and the islands of the Recherche Archipelago. Mandooboornup is the Aboriginal name for Frenchman Peak, which is significant to the local Aboriginal culture. The Shire also manages three bush campsites in coastal reserves; check the latest conditions at the campsites before you travel.
