Venus Bay lies on a narrow peninsula on the coast of South Gippsland. Five surf beaches, golden sandy beaches and wild waters give the town its maritime character. Anderson Inlet offers a different contrast: boating is popular in the calmer waters around the inlet. This gives you different coastal experiences to consider when planning your trip: surf, calmer water and trails through the coastal landscape.

The beach and seasonal patrols

Venus Bay No. 1 Beach is the only beach in Cape Liptrap Coastal Park patrolled by lifeguards. Patrols operate between December and April; patrol times vary. If you are planning a visit to this beach, check the current schedule before you travel. This lets you take the seasonal patrols into account when choosing when to visit.

Trails between the beach, inlet and river

The Point Smythe Nature Trail starts at the end of Lees Road in Venus Bay and passes through coastal vegetation to the beach at Point Smythe. The return walk is six kilometres long and takes about two hours. This approximate duration helps you plan the trail as a standalone activity: the walk combines a route through vegetation with a specific beach destination. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Anderson Inlet Walk focuses on a different kind of shoreline. The route follows Anderson Inlet past coastal vegetation, tidal mudflats and mangroves. Unlike the Point Smythe Nature Trail, which leads to the beach at Point Smythe, this walk draws attention to the inlet’s shorelines. This lets you choose between a walk with a beach destination and one where mangroves and mudflats shape the landscape.

The Tarwin Lower to Venus Bay Shared Pathway also follows a waterway, this time the banks of the Tarwin River. It complements the beach and inlet perspectives with a river setting. If you particularly enjoy landscapes along a river, this trail offers a different focus from a beach destination or inlet shoreline.

Art in the reserve and choosing where to stay

Van Cleef Reserve lies in the heart of Venus Bay. Several walking trails and interactive art installations give the reserve a different character from routes that mainly pass through coastal or shoreline landscapes. Nature and designed elements sit side by side here, adding another kind of discovery to trips to the beach and inlet. Walking trails and installations may change over time. Check current conditions before your visit.

Would you like to focus on surf beaches, or are you more interested in mangroves, mudflats or the riverbank? Trails through coastal vegetation and interactive art offer their own points of interest, too. If you are looking for a hotel in Venus Bay, considering these experiences can help you decide what kind of stay you want. This keeps your choice of destination grounded in specific landscapes and activities, rather than reducing Venus Bay to a single beach image.
