Trentham combines a distinctive railway past with walking and cycling trails, local history and regional food experiences. To plan your stay, it helps to decide what you want to focus on first: would you rather discover the town’s history, spend time on the trails or explore its food offerings?

Railway heritage in town

Trentham’s railway station dates from the 1880s and is one of the few surviving stations on Victoria’s branch-line network. It lies on the former line from Carlsruhe to Daylesford. The Trentham Rail and Tramway Association (TRATA) manages, maintains and preserves the station grounds, including the historic railway vehicles on display there.

The Domino Trail begins at the old station. Information boards on site offer insights into the region’s railway heritage. Here, you’ll find both a preserved station associated with the former railway line and a starting point for a trail connecting Trentham and Lyonville.

Walking and cycling on two trails

The Domino Trail is a rail trail that you can use for walking or cycling. It runs between the Central Victorian towns of Trentham and Lyonville and is six kilometres each way. The Wombat Trail has a different focus: it is an easy, nine-kilometre walking trail with an approximate walking time of two hours. These details can help with planning your day, but they need to be read differently: the six kilometres for the Domino Trail is one way; for the Wombat Trail, the stated length is for the walking trail.

The Wombat Trail starts and ends at Quarry Street Reserve. It connects Quarry Street Reserve, Stoney Creek Reserve and Bath Street Reserve in town with the former Trentham Racecourse Reserve in Wombat State Forest. If you’re planning to walk the route, check conditions before your visit, as they may change. So length isn’t the only factor when choosing between the trails: the Domino Trail can also be cycled, while the Wombat Trail is described as easy and has an approximate walking time.

Trentham’s buildings and stories

The Old Police Complex comprises five portable weatherboard buildings. They served as the town’s police station from 1866 to 1987. Today, the complex houses police memorabilia and local history displays, including material on the Trewhella Foundry, Dr Gwen Wisewould and the region’s potato industry.

The Trentham District Story offers another way to explore local history: an outdoor installation featuring twelve double-sided information panels. They present the Indigenous and European histories of the Trentham area. Together with the information at the railway station, they offer different ways to explore the town’s history through its railway, local institutions and regional stories.

Waterfalls and local flavours

Trentham Falls is located in the area around Trentham. The waterfall has the highest single drop in Central Victoria. It’s another of the nearby attractions for anyone looking to combine the town’s history or a trail walk with an outing in nature.

Food and local produce are also part of what’s on offer. During Spudfest weekend, Spudfeast brings together special potato-based dishes from local providers in Trentham and the surrounding region. The programme may change. In the centre of Trentham, Sisko Chocolate Studio is an artisan chocolate studio and experience. Bookable hands-on workshops include truffle making, shaping chocolate flowers, premium moulding classes and seasonal decorating classes. Many experiences may include a tasting from bean to bar, explaining the process from origin to finished product. Individual workshops and tasting availability may vary. Check the current offering when planning these experiences.

The Trentham Farmers' Market takes place on the third Saturday of every month at the Town Square and showcases fresh, seasonal produce from the surrounding region. Dates and schedules may change, so check the market day before your trip.
