Toolondo: Lake, Fishing and Architectural History
Accommodation in Toolondo
Toolondo offers two distinct points of interest: Lake Toolondo, a reservoir for recreational fishing and water sports, and Mount Talbot Homestead, with its architectural history. If you are planning a stay, you can first consider whether activities on the water or the history of a Victorian homestead are more appealing to you.
Lake Toolondo: Fishing and Water Sports
Lake Toolondo is a reservoir independent of the river system, fed by its own small catchment at Mt Talbot Creek. Water levels can be low. Therefore, check the current water level and local water safety conditions before water-based activities.
The lake is considered an outstanding stocked trout fishery for recreational angling. Fly fishing, bait fishing and spin fishing are possible methods, particularly for trout. The areas also offer different approaches: boat fishing among the trees contrasts with spin fishing in open water. This allows you to factor both fishing method and area of the lake into your plans.
The lake is also used for swimming and various boating activities. A boat ramp and toilets are located at the northern end. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check local conditions before travelling.
There are camping options on the eastern shore, including a privately operated caravan park. If you plan to use this accommodation option, confirm availability before setting off.
Mount Talbot Homestead: Architectural History in Toolondo
Mount Talbot Homestead is a tangible example of Victorian architectural history. The imposing two-storey bluestone mansion was built around 1862 as an extension to the original single-storey residence. Its form thus reflects two phases in the development of the homestead: the older single-storey house and the later extension.
Mount Talbot Homestead was designed by Joseph Shanks Jenkins using contemporary pattern-book designs. Its design connects the building with architectural models of the time; together with the bluestone and two storeys, this gives it a distinctive architectural profile. The homestead is also one of around 16 properties in Victoria still held by descendants of the original landholder. Alongside its architectural history, the history of ownership is another distinct aspect of this place.
More Local Information
Toolondo Recreation Reserve is located on Natimuk Hamilton Road in Toolondo, VIC 3401. A strategy published by Horsham Rural City Council in May 2019 lists it as a sporting facility for sports fields and organised recreational activities. Thus, alongside the water-related attractions of Lake Toolondo, there is also a separate connection with organised recreational sport.
The priorities also differ in terms of what matters when planning: at the lake, water levels and water safety may be important for activities, while the homestead is centred on architectural form, design and history. You can explore Toolondo with a focus on water activities or historic architecture.
