Sea Lake: Art and Landscapes of the Mallee
Accommodation in Sea Lake
Sea Lake brings together Mallee-inspired art and nearby landscapes. Local sights include the main street and the silo art; Lake Tyrrell is seven kilometres to the north, and Green Lake is ten kilometres away. You can decide whether you’re more interested in murals and culture, reflections on the lake, or walks and picnics by the water.
Art Inspired by the Mallee
Sea Lake’s main street is adorned with murals depicting local flora and scenes of Mallee life. The Sea Lake Silo Art is part of the Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail. It depicts a young girl swinging from a Mallee eucalyptus tree and looking towards Lake Tyrrell.
The murals bring together plant life and scenes of everyday life; the silo art places a single figure in relation to the lake landscape. You’ll encounter different artistic themes around town, without having to focus on just one. If you enjoy taking a closer look when you travel, the artworks offer a starting point: one foregrounds local flora, while another explores the connection between a figure and the view towards Lake Tyrrell.
Reflections at Lake Tyrrell
The shallow, ancient Lake Tyrrell lies seven kilometres north of Sea Lake. Its reflective surface makes for striking views, especially at sunrise and sunset. These times of day give the lake its own appeal and set its landscape apart from the art in Sea Lake. If you’d like to make the light on the water a focus of your trip, you can plan your visit around it.
A guided Lake Tyrrell sunset tour offers a visit with a local operator. Tour availability and operator details may change; check them before your trip if the tour is important to your plans. You can also book a tour to Lake Tyrrell at the Sea Lake Visitor Information Hub.
Green Lake: Beach and Walks
Ten kilometres from Sea Lake, on Sea Lake-Birchip Road, Green Lake offers sandy beaches, powered sites, showers, and plenty of picnic and barbecue areas. There are also opportunities for walks through the bushland around the lake bed and the adjoining Mallee and Pine-Buloke Forest Reserve. Green Lake combines time by the water with walks through bushland and forest, while Lake Tyrrell is known especially for its reflective surface and striking sunrise and sunset views.
If a particular site or facility is essential to your visit, check its current status in advance. This gives you a clear distinction to consider when planning your trip: Green Lake is about the beach, picnics and walks, while Lake Tyrrell is about the striking reflections of the shallow lake.
Culture and Visitor Services in Town
The Sea Lake Visitor Information Hub provides information about travel through the Wimmera Mallee, sells local products and houses a gallery of Indigenous art. You can also use it to book a tour to Lake Tyrrell. As visitor services may change, it’s worth checking in briefly if you’re relying on a particular offering.
The Skymirror Gallery opened in March 2018 and exhibits works spanning traditional landscape photography to fine art. Together with the murals and silo art, it broadens Sea Lake’s cultural offerings with different forms of art: from depictions of local flora and scenes of Mallee life to landscape photography and fine art.
