Founded in 1853 during the Victorian gold rush, Rushworth lies in the heart of the world’s largest box-ironbark forest. Historic buildings and surviving railway features provide tangible points of reference for exploring the town. There is also a trail along a disused railway corridor, a monthly market and nearby opportunities for water sports.

History along High Street

As you walk along High Street, you can read the plaques of the community project “Walk Through Time” on numerous buildings. The street is lined with historic buildings; many historic buildings in Rushworth are classified by the National Trust. There is also a hundred-year-old band rotunda on High Street, likewise classified by the National Trust. The plaques share stories about the buildings, while the architecture itself shapes the historic streetscape.

The Rushworth Museum is housed in the former Mechanics Institute. Its collection comprises more than 4,000 objects relating to local history; the inventory count may change. Visiting the collection and looking at the historic buildings offer different ways to explore Rushworth’s history: objects here, traces in the streetscape there.

Railway traces

The former railway site can also be identified by several surviving features. The goods shed and platform in Rushworth are still standing; a significant part of the trackwork also remains at the former station site. The remains of the old railway turntable are still visible east of the CFA station site. Taken together, these features point to different parts of the former railway facility, from the turntable and platform to the tracks.

The Waranga Rail Trail offers another connection to railway history: it follows the route of the disused railway line from Rushworth to Murchison. The accessible trail is 19 km long. Check local conditions before using it, as they may change.

Forest, water and local produce

Rushworth’s location in the heart of the box-ironbark forest contrasts with the historic town centre. Harriman Point is near the destination. In 2022, Goulburn-Murray Water installed a two-lane boat ramp there, improving access for boating, sailing, windsurfing, fishing, jet skiing and kayaking. As facilities can change, check the current condition of the site before making specific plans.

The Community Market also offers a glimpse of local goods. A report dated 6 November 2024 lists the market as taking place monthly on the third Saturday, from 8 am to 1 pm, at Rushworth Village Green, 25 High St. It lists plants, fresh produce, arts and crafts, gifts, food and wine; the stall selection may vary. Check the latest market details before visiting.

It helps to distinguish between locations: some of these places and offerings are in Rushworth, Harriman Point is nearby, and the Rail Trail runs between Rushworth and Murchison. Base your search on which destinations you want to include.
