Porepunkah brings together the Ovens River, a seasonal river swimming area, riverside trails and traces of the region’s early tourism history. This gives you plenty to explore during your stay, from the water and a walk to a historic hotel site. If you’re looking for a destination with a range of ways to spend your days, the differences in season, trail length and historic character can help you plan.

River Swimming and Finding Your Way Around

Porepunkah River Pool is in Riverside Park on Nicholson Street. In the warmer months, the Ovens River is dammed to create a river swimming area. There is also a children’s wading pool near the riverbanks, close to the River Pool. Families can choose between the two water attractions: the seasonal river swimming area and the nearby children’s wading pool. If swimming is a main focus of your trip, take the warmer months into account when choosing when to visit. The Porepunkah River Walk also starts in Riverside Park. This makes the park a specific landmark for the River Pool and the starting point for the walk.

Trails Along the Ovens River

The Bright–Porepunkah section of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is 6.6 km long, fully sealed and runs alongside the Ovens River. The Porepunkah River Walk offers a different option: it is 2.5 km long and takes 45 minutes as a return walk. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Ovens River and can also look out for traces of the gold rush era. This gives you a longer trail section and a shorter walk with a specific return-trip duration to choose from. The 45-minute estimate helps you plan for the River Walk; for the rail trail, the section length between Bright and Porepunkah is the clearest point of comparison. Consider which route better suits your day’s plans. It’s worth checking current trail conditions before setting out.

A Piece of Tourism History

Russell’s Temperance Hotel was built in 1878 and served local tourism for two decades. It became known among locals and visitors for its terraced gardens on the banks of the Ovens River. The site still has terraces, paths and the foundations of stone walls. The stepped terraces, paths and wall foundations give you an impression of the different features of the former grounds. This connects the history of local tourism with tangible traces at the site. It offers something different from the river and trail experiences, with a particular historic site and its garden design at the heart of the story.
