Moonambel combines wine connections and gold history with a distinctly scenic setting. The town is associated with a wine region and welcoming cellar doors; remnants of the gold rush era recall its past. If you’re looking for a hotel, first consider whether cycling, local history, wine or nature will be the focus of your trip.

Landscape and Local Character

Moonambel lies below the Pyrenees Ranges and is surrounded by Pyrenees State Forest and St Arnaud National Park. Quiet bushland, panoramic views and a dark night sky full of stars define the natural side of the town. When planning your trip, you can consider the landscape and starry skies as interests in their own right, alongside cycling options and historic sites.

Cycling Options with Different Highlights

The Moonambel Shared Pathway connects the town with wineries to the west and is used by pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Moonambel and local tourism destinations. The St Arnaud to Moonambel Cycle Tracks offer varying difficulty levels and terrain, and are suitable for mountain bikes and hybrid bikes. These tracks include a 20 km wine tour. The Avoca–Moonambel Cycle Loop starts either at Avoca Chinese Garden or Moonambel Community Common. It is suitable for cyclists of all fitness levels, with detours leading to 20 wineries and cellar doors. You can choose between the varied terrain and difficulty levels of the St Arnaud tracks and a loop with two possible starting points and wine detours. Check track conditions and access before setting out; the availability of individual cellar doors may vary.

The Moonambel–Warrenmang Trail can also be ridden from Moonambel Recreation Reserve. Check track conditions before your ride.

Local History on Trails and at Memorial Sites

The Moonambel’s Historic Walk highlights more than 18 sites and explores their historical significance and locations. Moonambel Playground is part of the Moonambel Heritage Walk. The restored Moonambel Lock Up stands in Moonambel Common. Information boards tell visitors more about the building’s history; local access information may change, so check before visiting. A gold discovery monument beside the Lock Up, with a plaque and quartz stone, commemorates James and John Thomas and the discovery of gold at Mountain Creek, or in Moonambel, in 1860.
