Lethbridge can be explored through very different themes: wine tastings, railway heritage and aviation. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether food and wine, architectural and transport history, or a flying experience should shape your stay. These examples show how varied the highlights in Lethbridge can be.

Wine tastings and a historic tasting room

Lethbridge Wines’ Cellar Door offers three different tasting experiences. The tastings are relaxed and often take place with the winemaker. The options available may change, so check the current offering before your visit.

The tasting room at Moorabool Ridge Vineyard & Cafe is located in a shepherd’s cottage built in 1856. This creates a clear distinction for wine enthusiasts: Lethbridge Wines focuses on different tasting experiences, while at Moorabool Ridge the historic building also provides the setting for the tasting room.

Railway history and technical details

Lethbridge Station served passengers, farmers and local industries. It enabled the transport of wool, grain and livestock to regional markets. The station’s history therefore encompasses both passenger services and freight transport. The station has been decommissioned and is an important part of Lethbridge’s heritage.

The Lethbridge Railway Water Tank is a significant relic of Victoria’s steam railway era. Once an important watering point for locomotives, it supplied steam locomotives with water from local reserves and the Moorabool River. The former tank was built in the 1860s from riveted cast-iron plates. It stands on a rectangular basalt base that housed the pumping station. These components show how water storage, the pumping station and steam operations were connected.

Heritage and wine-growing history

Moranghurk Homestead is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is of outstanding significance as a rare example of early Australian colonial style. The building was constructed using vertical timber slabs with cover strips, a technique otherwise unknown in Victoria. For architecture enthusiasts, its particular appeal lies in the combination of colonial style and this distinctive construction detail. St Mary’s Catholic Church is also designated as a heritage site in Lethbridge. The two places represent different aspects of the area’s local heritage.

Another glimpse into the history of wine growing begins in 1874, when Swiss immigrants established the Flagship Vineyard in Lethbridge. In 1996, Maree and Ray replanted it. The dates mark two different events—the vineyard’s establishment and its later replanting—and give wine enthusiasts a sense of the timeline of local wine-growing history.

Scenic flights and choosing your accommodation

Scenic flights and a flight school are available at Lethbridge Airport. Joy Flights Melbourne operates there and offers scenic flights in restored Tiger Moths and a CT4 RAAF Airtrainer.
