Lake Boga combines an unusual flying boat history with experiences on the water and a landscape of lake, foreshore path and lagoons. The town lies on the northeastern edge of Victoria’s Mallee region; the lake covers approximately 800 hectares. This offers several different ways to plan your visit: you can explore its wartime history, set aside time by the water or focus on the foreshore and lagoons.

Flying Boat History and Art

The Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum site was part of the only purpose-built flying boat repair base operated in Australia during the Second World War. The site is also home to a Catalina aircraft, one of only a few examples of this significant warplane preserved in Australia.

The silo art installation at the GrainCorp site in Lake Boga offers a different perspective: it depicts a historic Catalina aircraft and renowned pilot George Urquhart “Scotty” Allan. Established in 2000, the Lake Boga Story Wall is a hand-cut glass sculpture in mosaic style and one of six national symbols of reconciliation in Australia. It depicts the region’s landscape, water, people, cultures, history and ways of working. While the Catalina imagery highlights flying boat history, the Story Wall broadens the focus to include people, culture and regional ways of working.

Lake Boga on and in the Water

Lake Boga is a popular place for kayaking, and boats can be launched into the lake from several public boat ramps around its shores. Redfin and native fish species are found in Lake Boga, including Golden Perch and Murray Cod. There is also a fishing jetty on the foreshore.

A sealed path runs 4.3 km along the lakeshore and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. This gives you a choice between activities on the water and an option along the shore; you can choose to walk or cycle the path. Its length provides a clear frame for exploring the foreshore.

Check the current condition of the path and fishing jetty before your trip, as path conditions and facilities can change.

Lagoons, Wildlife and Recreation

The two nature spots offer different experiences: Turtle Lagoon comprises winding lagoons teeming with wildlife; Lake Boga also includes Round Lake, home to the rare Murray Hardyhead and a diverse range of birdlife.

Lake Boga Recreation Reserve has a playground for younger visitors and sports facilities where team competitions are held. For trips with younger visitors, the playground is a useful point of reference; the sports facilities offer a different kind of recreation, with team competitions.

Flying boat history, experiences on the water and a lagoon landscape shape a stay in Lake Boga in different ways; your personal priorities may play a role when choosing a hotel.
