Hamilton brings together art, garden culture, history and waterside experiences. Hamilton Gallery and the Botanic Gardens offer different cultural highlights; at Lake Hamilton, you can enjoy walks, cycling and a range of water activities. You can shape your stay around whether you’d most like to explore exhibitions and history or spend time outdoors.

Art, Garden Culture and History

Hamilton Gallery is recognised nationally and internationally for its outstanding collection and the variety of its exhibitions. Younger visitors can enjoy dedicated art spaces for children and exhibition explanations tailored specifically to them. Activities also change regularly. If you’re travelling with children, these areas can offer them their own way to engage with art and exhibitions; check in advance which activities will be available during your visit.

Hamilton Botanic Gardens are among Australia’s earliest regional botanic gardens. William Guilfoyle designed their layout, and today the gardens are considered an important part of Victoria’s cultural heritage. The combination of garden design and history offers a different perspective on Hamilton from the Gallery’s exhibitions or the transport history at the museum.

The Sir Reginald Ansett Transport Museum is dedicated to transport and tourism pioneer Reg Ansett, who founded his transport company in Hamilton, Victoria, in 1931. The museum is housed in Ansett’s original aircraft hangar, which was relocated to Hamilton, and displays more than 1,000 items relating to the history of the Ansett group. It highlights both the history of a company and a specific place from Ansett’s past. Visitors interested in transport and tourism will find another way to explore Hamilton’s history here.

Lake Hamilton and Outdoor Trails

Lake Hamilton lies at Hamilton’s eastern end, surrounded by 25 hectares of parkland. A 4.2-kilometre trail is designed for walking and cycling. Fishing, water skiing, sailing, rowing, windsurfing, canoeing and swimming are also possible on the lake. Conditions can affect individual activities; if a particular activity is important to your plans, check in advance what’s suitable for your visit.

The lakeside trail and the Hamilton to Coleraine Rail Trail offer different ways to spend time outdoors: the Lake Hamilton trail is for walks and bike rides, while the Rail Trail is an option for more experienced walkers and mountain bikers. Its first section starts on the outskirts of Hamilton and passes through working farms and a landscape of red gum trees before reaching Wannon-Nigretta Falls Road. The trail is still being developed, and conditions may change. Check the current trail status when planning your visit.

Planning Your Stay
