Flowerdale between Creek Country and Remembrance
Accommodation in Flowerdale
Flowerdale brings together the riverside landscape of King Parrot Creek, wildlife watching, memorial sites and art. Two reserves offer different experiences along the creek: Moores Road Reserve combines picnic facilities with the possibility of seeing a platypus; Coonans Reserve is known for its riverside vegetation and nocturnal wildlife watching. A seasonal twilight bloom event is also one of the area’s special occasions.
Nature along King Parrot Creek
Moores Road Reserve is on the banks of King Parrot Creek at the Kenny Road bridge. Facilities include toilets, picnic tables and an electric barbecue. As facilities may change, check conditions before your visit. If you remain quiet, you may be able to see a platypus, although a sighting is not guaranteed. The reserve therefore combines practical picnic facilities with a wildlife-watching opportunity whose outcome is uncertain.
Coonans Reserve is a six-hectare Crown land area on King Parrot Creek in Flowerdale. Its creekside vegetation includes manna gums, candlebark eucalyptus and various riverbank shrubs. It offers a different kind of nature experience: Coonans is one of the district’s key locations for nocturnal spotlighting. Organised walks may not run continuously. For planning purposes, the two reserves therefore differ in their stated highlights: Moores Road Reserve offers picnic facilities and the possibility of a platypus sighting, while Coonans combines riverside vegetation with nocturnal wildlife watching.
Remembrance and art in Flowerdale
The Flowerdale Bushfire Memorial honours the eleven people who lost their lives in the 2009 bushfires in the Flowerdale area. The Flowerdale Memorial Garden contains 13 stones representing the 13 community members who died in the Black Saturday 2009 bushfires. Together, these memorial sites give the history of the bushfires its own place alongside the area’s natural attractions.
Mural art is also part of the cultural offering: the Dindi Arts Trail features ten different murals at six locations, including Flowerdale. The trail provides a multi-location framework for those who would like to include art in their travel plans alongside creekside scenery and remembrance. Check which murals are currently part of the trail before your visit.
A seasonal twilight bloom event
Gather & Bloom – Twilight Pick is a seasonal golden-hour event held when the farm is in full bloom. Its character differs from that of the reserves and memorial sites: the focus here is a time-limited flower farm experience. As the seasonal program may change, check the dates before planning your visit around it.
Choosing Flowerdale as a place to stay
If you prefer nature, you can weigh up Coonans Reserve’s vegetation and nocturnal wildlife watching against the picnic facilities and possible platypus sighting at Moores Road Reserve. If you are interested in local remembrance or mural art, you can include these in your travel plans. A visit to Gather & Bloom – Twilight Pick, on the other hand, depends on the seasonal program. Choose a hotel to suit the character of your trip, and check the event date if the twilight bloom event is central to your plans.
