Echuca combines river history with experiences on the water and routes along the rivers. At Echuca Wharf, you’ll encounter paddle steamers and the legacy of trade on the Murray River, along with museums, a historic walking tour and a range of cycling routes. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests in culture, technology or outdoor activities.

River history at Echuca Wharf

Echuca Wharf is listed as a National Heritage Place in Victoria. The Port of Echuca is a living monument to the 1870s. Authentic paddle steamers depart from the wharf daily, and the Port of Echuca offers guided tours every day. A one-hour trip on an authentic paddle steamer departs from Echuca Wharf and includes commentary on the history of the paddle steamer trade and the wharf. Check schedules and tour details before your trip.

You can also explore the wharf on foot: visitors can discover its upper and lower levels and enjoy views along the Murray River. The P.S. Adelaide is the world’s oldest operating wooden-hulled paddle steamer. It is a striking example of the connection between river transport and technology that has shaped Echuca’s history.

Steam engines and collections

At the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, you can learn more about the history of Australia’s inland river system and paddle steamers. The Evans Brothers' Sawmill is a working exhibit there. In the Steam Display, you can see original, working steam engines and pumps and meet the engineers who operate them. The offerings range from insights into river history to the machinery and how it is operated.

The Echuca Historical Society Museum offers another historical perspective. It is housed in the heritage-listed complex of the 1869 police station and lock-up, which is listed on the National Trust Register, in Echuca’s Historic Port Precinct. The museum displays artefacts from riverboats.

The Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum in Echuca has a very different collection focus: it displays more than 20,000 beer cans and related memorabilia. The museum offers guided tours; check the tour arrangements in advance.

Getting around on foot and by bike

The Echuca Historical Society offers a one-hour guided historic walking tour through Echuca’s heritage area. The tour is available seasonally. If you’d like to include it in your plans, check the available dates before your trip.

Cycling routes range from a short ride to longer outings. The easy ride to the Port of Echuca is 800 metres each way. Also described as easy, the Campaspe River Shared Pathway runs for 3.5 kilometres each way along the Campaspe River; two footbridges allow you to return to the centre of Echuca.

The Warren Street Shared Pathway is also 3.5 kilometres each way, but connects to western Echuca. So, despite having the same stated length, it heads in a different direction from the path along the Campaspe River. For a longer outing, the 8.7-kilometre-each-way ride to Christie's Beach is another option. Most of the route follows paths along the Murray River, and there is an opportunity to spot native wildlife along the way. Trail conditions may affect the routes.

The landscape of the Echuca Back 9 Golf Course features tree-lined fairways along the Campaspe River. When looking for a hotel in Echuca, you might first consider whether river history and museums, or time for cycling routes, will shape your stay.
