On the edge of Legana lie the Tamar Island Wetlands: mudflats, lagoons and islands across 60 hectares, with diverse plant and animal life. There are also places for play and sport, as well as food and wine experiences. This lets you plan your stay around specific interests—from nature and birdwatching to a tasting or a visit to a sports ground.

Wetlands and birdwatching

The Tamar Valley Wetlands Centre on the edge of Legana has a 500-metre boardwalk through estuarine wetlands to a bird hide. The path links a defined route with a clear destination, giving the visit a focus on nature and observation.

Important for planning: from 6 July to 17 December 2026, the path through the Tamar Island Wetlands will be partially closed while two bridges and a section of path are replaced. The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre and the path to the bird hide will remain open. The restriction therefore does not affect all the facilities and paths mentioned to the same extent.

Play and sports venues with different features

The parks differ in their facilities. Tanner Drive Reserve has a fenced off-leash area for dogs and two swings. Jelisa Court Playground has a bike path, picnic tables, a slide and two swings. Orchards Estate Playground offers nature play, opportunities for ball sports, slides and a flying fox. Families travelling with children can compare these places based on the features listed for each; assuming that the same things are available everywhere would not be helpful. As park facilities may be updated, check that the features you want are available before your visit.

The sports facilities also have different descriptions. Legana Recreation Youth Space includes a recreation area with a cricket pitch. Legana Sports Oval has a full-sized sports oval and a cricket pitch. Its use is divided according to school hours: during school hours it can be used by the school community, and outside those hours by the wider community. If you are planning organised use, confirm the current access arrangements in advance.

Consider Legana as a base

Legana lies at the southern end of the Tamar Valley, 12 kilometres northwest of Launceston. As a guide, the drive takes about 15 minutes; traffic and road conditions may affect journey times. If Launceston is also part of your trip, this gives you a specific point of comparison when choosing where to stay. When looking for a hotel in Legana, you can first consider whether your planned visits to the wetlands, playgrounds and sports facilities, or food and wine venues will be the main focus.
