Grove: Apple History, Markets and Cider
Accommodation in Grove
Grove connects the history of apples with a range of reasons to visit: the Apple Museum explores the apple history of Tasmania and the Huon Valley, the weekly market offers produce and crafts, and the Apple Shed brings together tastings, food and music. Seasonal blueberry picking is another option. When planning, therefore, consider not only the apple theme but also when you would like to visit Grove.
Discover Apple History and the Market
The Apple Museum offers a self-guided tour of about 20 minutes on the apple history of Tasmania and the Huon Valley. Historical artefacts and display panels are part of the tour. The short tour provides a manageable time commitment, and its focus is the history of apples in the region. At the museum, the focus is on discovering this history, while the market brings together produce and handcrafted goods.
The Willie Smith’s Artisan Markets take place every Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. They offer fresh produce and handcrafted goods from local makers, growers and creatives. The Apple Shed hosts live music every Friday from 6:30 pm, featuring local and visiting artists. These are different time slots to plan around: Friday evenings are for music, while the market takes place during the day on Saturday. If either one is central to your visit, check the date before you travel.
Seasonal Experiences and Apple Flavours
Something from the Ground welcomes visitors during the season for pick-your-own blueberries. This is available at designated times on Saturdays from January to March. Unlike the weekly market and live music, this experience is limited to a specific seasonal window. Check in advance when picking visits are scheduled.
Willie Smith’s Apple Shed at 2064 Huon Highway in Grove combines cider and spirits tastings, a bar and a restaurant in a rustic apple-packing shed. The tasting paddles at the Apple Shed include cider and apple spirits; the restaurant serves meals made with fresh local ingredients, bringing tastings and dining together in one place. The Charles Oates Distillery is also located at the Apple Shed.
The Apple Stand is open 24 hours a day during the apple season, from March to December. Seasonal fruit availability may vary. If you are coming for specific fruits, check what is available in advance. The two seasonal windows overlap in March.
Choose the Right Time to Travel
The museum’s approximately 20-minute tour offers a different time commitment. Plan your stay around the experience that matters to you, and check the time-specific offerings before you arrive.
