Discover Tennant Creek
Accommodation in Tennant Creek
Tennant Creek can be explored from very different perspectives: Warumungu culture, local art, mining history and sweeping views across the Central Australian region. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing these experiences by their character. A visit to the cultural museum offers a different focus from a walk around historic buildings or a trip to a lookout.
Culture, Art and History
Nyinkka Nyunyu is an arts centre, gallery and cultural museum. Visitors can learn about local Warumungu culture and Aboriginal life, history and Country in the Tennant Creek region. This offers a broad cultural perspective: the visit is not just about artworks, but also about history and the significance of Country.
The Julalikari Arts and Crafts Program is located at the Pink Palace on the northern outskirts of Tennant Creek. The program includes traditional and contemporary artworks, and local Aboriginal women artists paint on site. Visitors can talk with them, watch them at work and buy art directly. This makes the visit different from viewing a gallery: meeting the artists and seeing their work are also part of the experience described here.
The Battery Hill Gold Mining & Heritage Centre brings together mining history and a range of exhibition themes. It is located at the site of the historic No. 3 Government Gold Stamp Battery and displays historic mining equipment as well as vintage vehicles. The museum exhibitions also focus on Tennant Creek’s early pioneers, Albert Borella and mineral specimens from around the world. The story therefore ranges from the history of the site to an international collection of minerals.
The Tennant Creek Telegraph Station Historical Reserve, near Tennant Creek, 10 km north along the Stuart Highway, offers a different historical perspective. A self-guided walk takes visitors to historic buildings. Unlike Battery Hill, the focus here is the telegraph station, while the Gold Mining & Heritage Centre explores mining and its exhibitions.
Lookouts and Trails Nearby
Bill Allen Lookout offers 360-degree panoramic views of Tennant Creek and the Central Australian region. It can be reached via a sealed road, 1 km past the Battery Hill Mining Centre on Peko Road. There is a large car park on site with plenty of room to manoeuvre. The lookout adds views over the town and region to the museum and cultural experiences.
The trails also offer different experiences. A cycle path leads from the town centre to Tingkkarli/Lake Mary Ann. Kunjarra/The Pebbles is 11 km north of town, where a walking trail circles the sacred site. The difference is clear: the cycle path connects the town centre with its destination, while the trail at Kunjarra circles the sacred site.
