Tuncurry: Nine Mile Beach and Wallis Lake
Accommodation in Tuncurry
Tuncurry lies where Wallis Lake meets the ocean and is one of the twin towns at this meeting point. The lake and coast provide two clear reference points for planning your trip. Nine Mile Beach, also known as Tuncurry Beach, is right next to town and is known for good surfing. Wallis Lake is known for fishing. If you’re considering Tuncurry as a destination, you can first decide whether the beach and surfing or the lake and fishing better suit your plans.
Beach and swimming area
Nine Mile Beach has a kiosk, a children’s play area and barbecue facilities. For a trip with children, these are practical points to consider when planning your day: the play area offers a dedicated activity, the barbecue facilities make an outdoor meal possible, and the kiosk is another amenity at the beach. Facilities may change; check which amenities are available before your visit.
Tuncurry Rockpool is a designated swimming area at the breakwall. The swimming area is not patrolled. At Rockpool Reserve, you can walk along the beach or the breakwall; access conditions may change due to maintenance or safety works. The reserve also has play equipment suitable for children of all ages. If you’re planning a walk, allow for the possibility of access works.
Play facilities are available in two different places: Nine Mile Beach has a children’s play area, and Rockpool Reserve has play equipment for children of all ages. Swimming is subject to the separate restriction that the Rockpool is unpatrolled. This lets you consider the play facilities and swimming area separately when planning your day.
Wallis Lake, walks and fish
John Wright Park is on Wallis Lake and connects to the Forster-Tuncurry Foreshore Walk. If you’re planning a walk, you can make the park and the named trail a focus of your visit. This differs from the surfing associated with Nine Mile Beach and the designated swimming area at the Rockpool. You can therefore choose a place in Tuncurry based on whether the beach, swimming or a walk is your priority.
The Wallis Lake Fishermen's Co-op in Tuncurry sells fresh fish, fish fillets, prawns, crabs, lobsters, pipis, cockles and oysters directly to the public. This public outlet is a specific place to visit if you’d like to include fish and seafood in your travel plans. Product availability and opening hours may vary, so check ahead if you’re planning a visit.
Choose the right focus for your trip
These options highlight different aspects of the destination. You can then compare the location of a particular hotel with your own needs. That way, your search starts with a decision about which sides of Tuncurry you’d most like to experience.
