North Sydney Council: Harbour Walks, Bushland and Heritage
Accommodation in North Sydney Council
In North Sydney Council, harbour history, bushland trails and historic houses come together. You can explore former industrial sites, learn about the Cammeraygal people or combine a waterside walk with a visit to a house museum. This mix gives your trip different possible focuses, without every outing having to look the same.
Harbour Landscapes and Walks
The Coal Loader is a heritage-listed former industrial site on the harbour that brings together history, culture, industry, nature and community. The Platform offers harbour views and space for picnics, play and relaxation. Tunnel 2 is a public path leading to Balls Head. Balls Head Reserve contains numerous Aboriginal sites, including archaeological deposits, shell middens, artworks and rock engravings. A historic flagpole at Balls Head stands 90 metres above sea level.
On Berry Island, the Gadyan Track is a 750-metre, easy-to-walk, signposted loop through bushland. The trail shares stories and legends of the Cammeraygal people. Gadyan is the Aboriginal name for the Sydney carpet shell, which is commonly found in shell middens on the island. Berry Island Reserve also has picnic areas, a small beach and a varied playground.
Other trails offer their own highlights: the Gore Cove bushland walking track connects Smoothey Park, Greendale Park and Holloway Park via Gore Cove Reserve to Berry Island Reserve. The North Sydney Circle Walks are divided into six sections and connect Milsons Point, Waverton, Wollstonecraft, Long Gully Bridge, Cremorne Junction and Shell Cove. The Cremorne Reserve foreshore walk is ideal for walking, jogging and guided walks; it connects the North Sydney Council area with the Mosman Council area. Balls Head Reserve is a five- to ten-minute walk from Waverton Station.
Houses, Gardens and City History
The Don Bank Museum at 6 Napier Street is the oldest timber house in North Sydney. The building opened as a museum in 1981; its exhibitions focus on the history of the house and its former residents. In Kirribilli, you can explore the neighbourhood’s historical layers on the History Walk, from sandstone houses to Art Deco apartments. Despite post-war development, Kirribilli has preserved much of its built heritage.
Nutcote in Neutral Bay is a historic house museum with a well-kept garden that tells the story of May Gibbs’s life. Visitors can explore the house and garden; items on display include personal artefacts, pictures, sketches and letters. The self-guided Bradfield Park Heritage Walk passes through the heritage-listed Bradfield Park North. Words, images and displays on the surviving building walls and foundations beneath the park form the interpretive trail. The sandstone walls in Bradfield Park North are preserved evidence of North Sydney’s history.
Green spaces also have different stories: Cremorne Reserve includes the National Trust-listed Lex and Ruby Graham Garden. Wendy’s Secret Garden is in Lavender Bay; admission is free. Berry Creek is the longest remaining natural creek in North Sydney. For a different waterside experience, Maccallum Pool is a public harbour pool operated by North Sydney Council.
Experiences for Different Kinds of Travel Days
Those travelling with children will find playground equipment at Bradfield Park, with activities for children under five as well as those over five. Nature observation can also be part of your stay: Wildlife Watch is a citizen science program through which people can report wildlife sightings in North Sydney. The Wildlife Watch Walking Group meets quarterly at the beginning of each season. Check the latest event details before attending.
The experiences listed here offer different ways to get started. Bus route 269 operates as a loop from North Sydney via Kirribilli to Milsons Point. As route details and timetables may change, check them before travelling.
You can also explore Crows Nest as another destination.
