Narellan’s history can be read in buildings from different decades: a church shaped community life, an inn changed its name, and a house displays a Victorian architectural style. Those interested in these historical traces will find specific stories here that go far beyond a single date.

Churches, Inns and Historic Architecture in Narellan

Old St Thomas Chapel in Narellan was an Anglican church. Old St Thomas Chapel Hall opened as the first church on 10 November 1839 and served Narellan’s Anglican community until 1884. The former hall is now used as a photography studio. Its history therefore brings together a precisely dated beginning, a long-standing role in the community and a later use.

The names of former inns also tell stories of change: Narellan Hotel opened as Queen’s Arms in 1847, was extensively renovated around 1937 and renamed Byrnes Hotel. Burton Arms Inn was established at the entrance to Narellan around 1830; the building is now used as a real estate office. The two stories differ in their timelines, but both share a shift from an original inn name to later uses or designations.

Another perspective on local history leads to Studley Park House. The house was built for W.C. Payne in 1889 and is an example of Victorian Italianate architecture. Its style offers a specific point of reference for anyone interested in considering historic buildings not only by their age, but also by their architectural classification. Together, these buildings represent different chapters: church life, early inns and a later Victorian house.

More Experiences in the Wider Camden Council Destination

Camden Council offers its own themes for trip planning. Camden is in the Macarthur area and is considered the birthplace of Australia’s wool, wheat and wine industries. Those who enjoy exploring history independently can consider the self-guided walk as an alternative to the guided options.

The trails in the wider destination also offer different points of interest. Nepean River Trail is 4.2 kilometres long, runs alongside scenic waterways and public art, and connects the Nepean River with Camden’s main street. It also includes Camden’s first public art trail. John Oxley Reserve Recreational Trail was completed in 2025 and offers a nature-focused walking experience with public art, viewing platforms and educational features. This gives visitors a choice between a trail focused on the river and art, and another featuring nature, views and educational elements.

Camden Town Farm combines historic and current uses: originally a 52-hectare dairy farm bequeathed to the local community, it is now a working cattle farm and a recreation area for passive leisure. Camden Fresh Produce Markets are held on the grounds every Saturday from 7 am to 12 pm. As the schedule may change, check the current date before visiting.

Macarthur Park offers further historical connections, with its historic rose garden and the Camden War Memorial located there. The Agricultural, Horticultural and Industry (A.H. & I.) Society Hall is still in use more than 100 years after it was built. For a self-guided drive to rural and historic sites, there is the Camden Scenic Drive. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide which focus you want to shape your stay: Narellan’s architectural history, or the trails, parks and historic attractions in the wider Camden Council destination.
