Mogriguy: Discover History and Nature
Accommodation in Mogriguy
Mogriguy can be explored through its origins and named memorial sites. The village grew out of a depot for railway sleeper cutters; its former name, Goonoo, refers to a forest beside the depot, and the railway reached Mogriguy in 1901. Mogriguy Creek and Mogriguy National Park are also among the features that can shape a stay. The park is in the vicinity of Mogriguy, while the history of the hall and the Pioneer Memorial is directly connected with the village.
Railway Sleeper Cutters, the Railway, and Memorial Sites
The village grew out of a depot for railway sleeper cutters. Mogriguy was originally called “Goonoo,” after the forest beside the railway sleeper cutters’ depot. The railway reached Mogriguy in 1901. The old name preserves a reference to the landscape by the depot; the year the railway arrived provides another landmark in the village’s history.
Mogriguy Soldiers Memorial Hall is on Moonul Street and was opened on 1 January 1924. A 2025 community engagement report published by Dubbo Regional Council highlights the Mogriguy Pioneer Memorial as a particular focus in preserving the village’s history and character. This brings two memorial sites with different points of reference into focus: the hall has a specific street address and opening date, while the Pioneer Memorial is notable for its role in the village’s history and character.
A Forested Reserve in a Rural Setting
Mogriguy National Park is in the vicinity of Mogriguy. It is an isolated remnant of forest, eight kilometres west of Goonoo National Park. The reserve was established in December 2005 and covers 399 hectares. The park protects important habitat for the endangered ecological community of White Box, Yellow Box and Blakely's Red Gum Woodland. Before it was protected, the area was Mogriguy State Forest.
Most of the land around the park has been cleared of its original vegetation and is used mainly for agriculture, such as cattle grazing. Thus, a forested reserve and predominantly agricultural land sit side by side in the surrounding landscape. This contrast gives a more specific picture of the natural environment than a general description of “bushland”: the reserve is a defined forest remnant in a significantly altered setting.
Local History, Nature, or Motorsport as a Focus
The same community engagement report lists access to Mogriguy National Park and Mogriguy Creek among the most important activities and facilities in Mogriguy. It also lists a kart racing track as an important activity and facility. This gives you a choice of different themes to explore: the memorial sites reflect Mogriguy’s history, the park and creek offer connections to nature, and the track adds a motorsport dimension.
If you’re travelling with children or people with different interests, you can think ahead about which of these areas matters most to your group. Would you mainly like to explore local history, are you more interested in the forest habitat in the reserve, or is motorsport on your wish list? This way, your decision can stay aligned with your own plans.
