Discover East Lynne: trails and nature
Accommodation in East Lynne
East Lynne is an appealing base for days outdoors: access roads from here lead to walking destinations at Durras Lake and in the surrounding area. The Lake walking track follows the northern shore of Durras Lake through stands of Spotted Gums and remnants of the original coastal rainforest. The lakeside and coastal forest together shape this walking trail and give it a distinct focus on nature.
Walking and nature at Durras Lake
The Lake walking track also offers opportunities to spot kangaroos and birds. This gives the trail a second nature theme: as well as the lakeside landscape and vegetation, wildlife watching can be a highlight of the outing. If you plan your days around walking and wildlife watching, the Lake walking track is a specific place to start.
Access roads and road conditions
Access to the Lake walking track is via Mount Agony Road, from the Princes Highway at East Lynne. The Pebbly Beach to Durras Mountain walking track and the Depot Beach Rainforest walk are also accessible from there via Mount Agony Road. To reach Depot Beach itself, take Mount Agony Road from East Lynne, followed by North Durras Road. Shallow Crossing is accessible from the Princes Highway at East Lynne; the access route follows well-maintained unsealed roads suitable for all vehicles.
Weather advisories vary by destination: the road to the Lake walking track can become muddy in the rain, while the unsealed access roads to Shallow Crossing can be slippery. Road conditions can change. Check current park alerts and conditions for your planned route before setting out.
More places to visit nearby
Activities around Shallow Crossing include fishing, bushwalking and four-wheel driving. Unlike the Lake walking track, which is described as a specific trail along the northern shore, the Shallow Crossing area offers a range of activities.
Pebbly Beach picnic area is nearby. It is level and step-free. A 1.2 m-wide paved path leads past a picnic shelter and toilets to a wooden viewing platform overlooking the beach. Alongside the walking trails and outdoor activities, this adds a picnic and lookout spot as a separate focus for an outing.
Plan your stay
You can use the access routes as a guide when choosing where to stay: several walking destinations are accessible via Mount Agony Road, North Durras Road is also required for Depot Beach, and access to Shallow Crossing is via unsealed roads. Deciding which of these types of outings you want to focus on gives you a concrete starting point for your accommodation search.
