Discover Hall through its village history and the Hall Heritage Centre. The Centre is located in the former Hall Primary School at 19 Palmer Street, Hall. This makes the former school building itself part of the experience: the Centre is housed in a place that already has a history as a school.

Collection and school history

The Hall Heritage Centre collection comprises approximately 2,200 individual objects. The school museum includes a school building about a hundred years old, along with its furnishings and school objects. This brings two perspectives together: the approximate size of the collection and the specific school setting, with its building and fittings. Regular opening hours are Thursdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Check the current opening hours before your visit, as they may change.

Village history and natural heritage

Hall Village was proclaimed in 1882 and serves as a small rural service centre. Its history is connected with the pastoral use of the area before the establishment of the Australian Capital Territory. This places Hall in a rural past that predates the founding of the Territory.

The natural heritage of the Hall Village Heritage Precinct includes a threatened Yellow Box/Red Gum grassy woodland ecological community in the vicinity of Hall Village. This natural feature adds a specific habitat to the village and school history.

A specific stage of the Canberra Centenary Trail

For an active perspective on Hall, Section 4 of the Canberra Centenary Trail takes walkers and cyclists counterclockwise from Hall Village to Black Mountain Nature Reserve. Across the wider Australian Capital Territory destination, the Canberra Centenary Trail is a 138-kilometre self-guided route for walkers, runners and cyclists. It includes sites and landscapes of significance to the Ngunnawal. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between the stage described and the full trail: Section 4 specifies a particular start and end point, while 138 kilometres is the length of the overall route.

Nature and walking experiences there offer other highlights. Namadgi National Park protects 106,095 hectares of alpine, subalpine and montane bushland and has several hundred kilometres of walking trails. At Yankee Hat, an easy walk leads to ancient Ngunnawal rock art; access status may change. Check before visiting.

For culture, the Australian War Memorial features permanent exhibitions with more than 7,000 objects from the Memorial’s collection. Paved paths for pedestrians and cyclists lead to the entrance. Access arrangements may change; check the latest information before your visit if these paths are part of your plans. At Lake Burley Griffin, explore paths around the lake on foot, by bicycle or on an e-scooter. Boat cruises, picnics on the water and pedal-boat outings are also available there.
